Extensive cytological damage caused by measles in African children.

چکیده
The occurrence of mitotic and chromosomal aberrations was examined in cultured lymphocytes from 25 African children suffering from acute measles at an early stage (0-5 days after onset ofrash). In eight cases the mitotic response to phytohaemagglutinin was impaired. In two cases extensive changes were observed, involving the formation of giant polykaryotic syncytia with chromosome pulverization. It is suggested that the development of giant cells in vivo and the damage to epithelial membranes characteristic ofsevere measles in the tropics are to be correlated with these changes. A varying incidence of minor chromosome aberrations, mostly small gaps, was found in 15 cases of measles as well as in controls. The specific relationship of this type of aberration to the virus is questionable. Mitotic activity was induced in two replicate lymphocyte cultures in the absence of phytohaemagglutinin. The possible oncogenic potential of the measles virus is discussed in connection with the fusion-pulverization phenomenon.

Molecular detection of measles virus from children during a sporadic outbreak in two semi-urban areas in Nigeria.
BACKGROUND According to the World Health Organization (WHO), African region accounts for 36% of deaths caused by measles worldwide. Nigeria has, over the years, recorded the highest average annual measles incidence per 100,000 populations in Africa. Measles epidemics have consistently been reported in northern Nigeria, but not in the South; reports of reduced protective haemagglutination inhibi...
متن کاملObservations on the cytological diagnosis of an infectious erythema.
The clinical features of an infectious erythema which affected children and young people are described. Other writers have described the same disease and have suggested a viral origin. A cytological method is described which may establish the diagnosis, and the cytological appearances might also be useful in differentiating between erythema and measles.
متن کاملAge at first dose of measles vaccination in Ethiopia.
BACKGROUND Although measles vaccination is recommended to be given at nine months of age in Ethiopia and in most of sub-Saharan Africa, no information is available about the age at which children actually receive their first dose of measles vaccine. This has important implications in terms of preventing infection and averting epidemics of measles. OBJECTIVE To determine the age at which Ethio...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of measles and natural rubella antibodies among children in Bangui, Central African Republic
BACKGROUND Passively acquired maternal antibodies are necessary to protect infants against circulating measles virus until they reach the eligible age of vaccination. Likewise, high levels of population immunity must be achieved and maintained to reduce measles virus transmission. This study was undertaken to (1) assess the presence of maternally acquired measles-specific IgG antibodies among i...
متن کاملFallout of the enterocolitis, autism, MMR vaccine paper.
On the 28th Feb 1998 The Lancet published a paper by Andrew Wakefield 1 that proposed a new condition of enterocolitis, regressive autism and an association with MMR vaccine as the apparent precipitating event. At a press conference describing the 12 children case series he urged the use of single vaccines instead of MMR. The study generated immediate alarm and controversy. After its publicatio...
